venues
here is a guide to all the venues and access points to the best fishing spots on the holderness coast. Starting from bridlington working southwards.
bridlington harbour (north and south wall)
this is a easy and comfortable venue to fish.so in summertime i would avoid the area as it becomes very crowded with holiday makers and is not safe swinging 5oz of lead amongst the kiddies .
species
include whiting, codling, school bass, coalfish, rockling dogfish, dabs and mackrel (in season)
tackle and bait
night fishing this venue should produce best results starting from half tide up to a few hours after top standard light beach tackle is all that is required although some locals use carp rods with 2 hook patternoster rigs with 1/0 - 2/0 hooks baited with lug, rag, squid and mackrel strip but mussel can work well here.
but be carfull as weaver fish are often caught
directions
from hull take the a165 and follow straight in to bridlington harbour
barmston
this is located south of bridlington and is a clean sandy beach and is very shallow in places so looking for any depressions in the sea bed is the key to catching the fish.this area produces some big cod every season but tends to be"hit and miss" on most tides but choose a larger tide at this venue which will give you more depth of water.
species
include codling,cod,whiting,bass,rockling,dabs,flounder,dogfish and thornback ray
tackle and bait
standard beach casting gear 12-13ft rod 6500 size mutiplier reel with 12-18lb line 4-6oz breakout leads and a 50-60lb shockleader.2 hook patternoster rigs for small fish clipped down distance/pennal rigs for cod and rays. use squid, lug, rag and peeler crab
directions
from hull follow the a165 to bridlington and make a right turn at the sign marked at barmston caravan park just after the village of lissett park in the car park on the cliff top
skipsea
is is located about 6 miles north from hornsea and has a long straight flat beach with a fish holding gully at about 50 yds.tends to fish on a biggish tide with a good sea running .has produced some good bags of quality fish in the past
species
codling,cod,whiting,bass,flounder,dabs,thornbacks,dogfish and occasional sole
tackle and bait
standard beach tackle is all that is needed here with pennal
rigs and flappers
or a carp rod for close range fishing.squid rag, mackrel, lug and sandeel
directions
from hull follow the a165 to beeford turn right onto the b1249 and follow the signs for the beach in skipsea
hornsea
hornsea is a popular mark and regulally produces good fish from
the gently sloping beaches
at the north end and the south end of the town a good blow is often required
to bring in the fish at this venue as their isnt really any fish holding features
species
cod,bass,whiting,thornbacks,dabs and rockling
tackle and baits
standard beach casting gear 12-13ft rod 6500 size mutiplier reel with 12-18lb line 4-6oz breakout leads and a 50-60lb shockleader.2 hook patternoster rigs for small fish clipped down distance/pennal rigs for cod and rays. use squid, lug, rag ,peeler crab and sandeel
directions
from hull follow the a165 to bridlington then in leven take
the b1224 this will take you in to hornsea town centr
then follow signs for sea front
mapplton
mapplton is a popular venue as it has very easy accses and a car park at the cliff top this venue produces lots of thornbacks and dogfish in season but is hit and miss during the cod season as it is not really a deep venue but does produce some good bass.
there is some fish holding holes and gullys which should be fished on a flooding tide during calm conditions on a biggish tide with plenty of colour in the water
often fishes better on night tides
species
thornbacks,dogfish,bass,whitting,codling,flounder and eels
tackle and baits
standard beach tackle 6500 size reels loaded with 15lb line 60lb shock leader 12-13ft rods 4-6oz leads
"up and over" rigs are used for the thornys and dogfish with sandeel, peelers and squid as bait clipped down pennal pullys also do well when the cod are running . can fish well over low water the deeper water is located to the left hand side of the rocky sea defence wall as you walk down the ramp
directions
follow the a165 from hull and take the b1244 to hornsea then the b1242 to mapplton turn left into the car park
cowdan
cowdan is a little fished mark but can produce some very good bass as it is a very shallow venue and a good surf should be running to whip up the sea . cowdan can also produce lots of flatties and odd thornback in summer. a little too shallow for serious cod fishing but a few are caught from here
species
bass, flounder, dabs, thornbacks and odd codling and whiting
tackle and baits
a light bass or carp rod can be used here as the fish are at closed range but use standard beach gear for the thornys
directions
as for mapplton but carry on through mapplton until cowdan is reached a few miles south take a left turn on the long straight just after the white house and park at the bottom of the road there is a get down point just through the m.o.d gate
hilston
hilston can be a early season hotspot for codling and whiting in autumn with
its depp holes on a relativly shallow
beach . getting down the cliff can be a bit tricky especially after we have
had some rain as the cliff becomes very slippery
summer sees plenty of bass, thornbacks and dogfish with the odd smouthhounds
being caught
there is even the chance of a shore tope from this beach as they are regulaly
hooked and lossed
species
cod, whiting, bass, thornbacks, dogfish, smoothounds, flounder, dabs, and chance of a tope
tackle and baits
standard beach tackle for cod, dogs, thornbacks with lug, peeler, sandeels, squid
and rag worm
use stepped up tackle if you are going to target a tope but dont be dissapointed
if you do not hook one
pulley rigs, clipped down pennals and up and over will all produce fish here
try an 6inch eel section on a 100lb mono trace at distance for the tope
but please treat any tope with respect and make sure it is returned to the sea
unharmed
directions
from withernsea follow the b1242 heading for tunstall take
the sign post directed "sand le mer" carry on through the
village of tunstall until u reach some hay bails in a feild just passed the
small farm on the left park on the grass verge
and walk across the feild and down the cliff
tunstall
tunstall has produced some good results for me in past years
with its sloping shingle beach with clay beds and deep gullys
easy acsess and parking but can be popular on matches and weekends
cod and whiting are the main target in the autumn and summer sees bass and
thornbacks
try and avoid fishing to the left of the slipway as the tide reaches the
cliffs on most tides
species
cod,whiting,bass,thornbacks,dogfish and flatfish
tackle and bait
standard beach tackle with pennals ,pulleys and 2 hook flappers
will do well here with peeler, lug, rag, squid and sandeels
the bass can be targeted with light carp and bass rods fished close in
directions
as for hilston but when in tunstall village follow the signs for "sand le mer" caravan site and park at the site reception on the road side walk through the barrier to the boat yard and there is a slipway down to the beach
dimlington
dimlington is one of the best cod marks on this coast and has
won a lot of matches in recent years
lots of fish holding features make this beach a cod hot spot with deep gulleys
and clay beds rising out of the beach
can be snaggy at times and weed can be a problem but is often worth the hassle
can also fish well at low water
produces smoothounds in summer months
species
cod,whiting,bass and smouthhounds in summer
tackle and baits
standard beach tackle will be ok with up and over, clipped down
pennals and pulley rigs all work
use lug,rag,peeler,squid and gully worms
directions
from hull follow the a1033 to patrington village then follow
the sign post for spurn heritage coast b1445
until you reach easington village turn left at the "T" junctions past the
gas works and park on the side dirt road and walk down the cliff
spurn road
spurn road is a popular venue as it can throw
up some good bags of fish there is approx 3 miles of beach to fish here
all easily fishable and not to far a walk from the car.
very steep shelving beaches with large fish holding features such as rockbeds
and gullys
weed can be a problem hear as there is a lot of tide run on all except the
smallest of tides
tends to fish on the first hour of the flood and on the ebb tide but fish can
turn up at any time
species
mostly cod, whiting, bass, flattfish and odd thornback in summer
tackle and bait
again standard beach tackle is all that is required but bring
a few slightly heavier leads as tide can be a problem here
directions
from hull follow the a1033 to patrington village and take a
left onto the b1445 and head to easington village
at the T junction take a right and follow the road through kilnsea and then
you will arrive at the gates to spurn
a fee of £2.50 is needed to access the nature reserve and park in any of the
little parking spots along the road to the point
old hall
this is my favorite venue as it is always very quiet and peacfull
at most times of the year
due to anglers having to walk for half a mile across a field to the river
can throw up big bags of cod and whiting in the winter and in the summer flounder
and eels
a mainly muddy bottom but they are a few rock patches closer in from which
you are fishing from at high tide
the further to the left you walk the deeper the water
species
cod, codling, whiting, flounders, eels and odd sole are possible
tackle and bait
light beach tackle can be used here in the summer for the flatties
and eels
but winter you will need slightly heavier tackle to get the distance that the
fish are feeding at
worm and crab baits are only really worth trying here and tipping off with
squid strip
directions
from hull follow the a1033 to ottringham turn left in to ottringham
and follow road down to
sunk island then you should pass a church ,go straight ahead onto old hall
road
follow this road down until you reach a set of houses opposite a large feild.
park of the road on the grass verge and walk down passed the houses ,you will
see a small
land drain,go onto the left hand side of the drain and walk across the feild
down to the river
the feild is around a 20min walk with tackle
(please do not park or obstruct the driveways of the houses
at old hall)
